Our Learning:

Year 6 have had a busy Autumn Term, immersing themselves in the topic of The Ancient Civilisation of Benin.

In History, they  used a variety of sources of evidence to find out  how the Kingdom of Benin began, grew and developed into an Empire.  They  found out what life was like in Benin and the events that led to the eventual destruction of this ancient civilisation.

In Art, the children researched the Benin Bronzes.  They re-visited different sketching techniques and produced Art work based on their observations.

They held an extremely interesting debate, where they discussed whether the Benin Bronzes should be returned to Nigeria and wrote formal letters to The British Museum sharing their views.  Will the British Museum respond to our letters? Watch this space!

Year 6 also studied the jewellery that was worn by the people of Benin and found out how this jewellery influenced the costume design in the film 'Black Panther'.  They created their own jewellery which they wore during a recreation of the coronation of the Oba during our 'Turn Back The Clock' Day.

In Science, the Year 6 children explored 'Light'.  They created shadow puppet theatres which they used to investigate the size of shadows. Once the experiments were complete, they had great fun presenting puppet shows depicting scenes from The Ancient Civilisation of Benin.

During our 'Turn Back The Clock Day', children took on different roles.  We had chefs cooking jollof rice, guards protecting the Oba, entertainers who performed amazing gymnastic routines, musicians who provided the music and guilds people who created gifts for the Oba using a variety of materials, including clay.
