Year 2

Kaneez Haider    and    Catherine Richards         &          Polly Sands

Welcome to Year 2!

In year 2 we have started summer term with lots of energy. In literacy, we are extending children's writing skills to bring their ideas to life in exciting ways; this term we are basing our English work on ‘Ocean Meets Sky’ by The Fan Brothers and ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’ by Raymond Briggs, the books will inspire the children to write character descriptions, diary entries and fantasy narratives. We have also started Comprehension Ninja to help the children with their reading comprehension. In maths, we have started learning the 2, 5 and 10 times tables as well as having regular sessions of Mastering Maths. We are moving on from our fantastic focus of 'What a Wonderful World'  - which included visits to Tower Bridge and Sunnyhill Nature Garden, and learning lots about life on land, animals and their habitats and amazing historical figures who have helped us understand life on earth.  We worked on our athletics skills with Moving Matters and had Benchmark Gymnastics sessions where all the children made incredible progress. This term, we are looking forward to learning all about London and Beyond.

Year 2 this term will be doing Tag Rugby for outdoor PE and 'Fundamentals' for indoor PE- children using their gross motor abilities to move, balance and manage ball skills (2S Tuesday and Friday and 2HR Monday and Wednesday).  Excitingly, year 2 will be taking part in an athletics tournament in May. We will continue to do music lessons with Lambeth Music Service once a week, weekly visits to the library and various after school clubs and musical instrument lessons which many of our children take part in. There is homework set every week on the Sunnyhill School website on the Year 2 page, and the children have homework exercise books to complete their homework, spellings and any other work they enjoy doing in their spare time. Please make sure you access this as well as reading their Collins Connect books online regularly. This term we are looking forward to a celebratory King’s Coronation picnic, Sports Day, The Great Get Together, our trip to the seaside and lots of other stimulating and fun opportunities
