Our Curriculum

At Sunnyhill, we have developed a high quality curriculum that has been carefully designed and sequenced in order to build up the children’s knowledge and skills, as a result, expanding their long term memory.

We have built in opportunities for repetition, allowing children to revisit previous learning.  We aim to ensure that children are not merely covering content but achieving a depth to their learning which enables them to use their skills and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.  We use schema maps within the classroom to put new information into a meaningful context, helping the children to remember and understand what they have been taught.

English and Maths are taught independently.  Foundation subjects are linked through a creative, cross curricular approach.

Curriculum intent

Our Curriculum is underpinned by our core values of:

  • Respect one another

  • Every individual matters

  • Take responsibility

  • Strive for excellence and

  • Try your best

Our school logo embodies our curriculum vision.

Water
  • We aim to take the children on a cross curricular and creative learning journey where subject specific skills are revisited and developed each year.  We view this journey like a river where each year group is a tributary supporting the river to reach its final destination.

  • We offer a challenging curriculum where each child is supported in achieving their full potential.

  • We prepare children for life beyond the primary classroom, promoting positive attitudes to learning which reflect the skills needed for future success.

  • We enable children to develop Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills as the tools to access future learning.

  • We enrich the children with a wealth of vocabulary and language skills which they need to develop their long term memory.

  • We provide a wide variety of enrichment opportunities which develop the children’s cultural and Science capital.

  • A varied timetable for extra-curricular activities is offered by the school, with clubs that support the core curriculum offer, as well as those which develop specialist skills. whilst also extending the range of children’s experiences.

Fire
  • We aim to ignite the imaginations and curiosity of the children through valuable and meaningful learning experiences.

  • We value and build on the talents and creativity of all of our pupils, encouraging them to develop their skills and passions in all subject areas.

Sun
  • At Sunnyhill we pride ourselves on a warm welcome to all.  We promote community involvement, recognising the wealth of experiences and opportunities that living in London provides.

  • We endeavour to give all children opportunities to share their thoughts and opinions and play an active role in the decisions that affect their learning and well-being.  We want to nurture a culture where all children feel listened to, valued, respected and empowered.

  • We organise special events, visitors, curriculum days and family events to enrich our pupils’ lives.

Earth
  • Our curriculum reflects Streatham’s diverse and vibrant community.  We value the cultural influences that can be drawn from within our school and the local area.

  • We promote the health and well-being of the whole school community.

  • We want our pupil’s to leave Sunnyhill with the belief that they have the potential to make a positive contribution to the world in which they live.
