Our vision: Learning together we will all be exceptional artists!

At Sunnyhill, we provide a rich and diverse Arts curriculum.  We believe that all pupils can achieve in Art and Design and that high-quality Art lessons will inspire children to think innovatively.  The Sunnyhill ethos is that ‘Art is in everything. Art is everywhere. Art can inspire.’

We want Sunnyhill pupils to:

  • Explore their creativity

  • Develop skills in a range of art techniques

  • Learn about the life and works of artists from the past and the present, developing their own opinions about different creative styles

  • Learn from experts

  • Make connections to other topic areas

  • Be confident with using different art tools and materials

  • Express themselves through the medium of art

  • Be reflective and evaluate their work

How art is taught at Sunnyhill:

In the Early Years, art is incorporated into the ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ strand of learning. Art provision often arises out of children’s interests e.g. mark making or using malleable materials. Links are also made with the class text, home learning, visits or experiences. Children have access to Indoor and outdoor classroom creative areas where they are encouraged to self - select materials to make creations of their own choosing.

From Year 1 to Year 6, the children develop skills in six key areas; painting, drawing, photography, 3D/sculpture, collage and printing. The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.

Art Enrichment

There are numerous opportunities for children to get involved in art experiences both inside and outside school. We’re constantly looking for new and meaningful art experiences to enhance the children’s learning.

We recently took part in a collaboration with the Hayward Gallery whereby a group of Year 4 children met the artists Matthew Barney and Igshaan Adams, taking part in a series of workshops to explore their artwork.  The children devised curriculum-linked activities and resources with accompanying videos which were added to the Hayward Gallery website.
